Hello families; here is what we are learning this week in Kindergarten:
ELA- We are reading different types of Expository books (nonfiction, informational). We are analyzing, inferencing (using what they already know, combined with what we learn from reading), to draw conclusions in our books!
We are still going over letters/sounds and recognizing consonants and vowels (vowels: a,e,i,o,u and sometimes y). We also talk about the 2 different sounds that vowels make; long and short.
This week, we are making cvc (consonant, vowel, consonant) words, using the letter e, and it's short sound! For example, bed, bet, jet, leg, pen, red, web.
Writing- We are working on going back and editing papers that we are done writing, to reread what we have written. Children are using their fingers to slide read under their sentences, to see if what they wrote, is what they wanted to say. We are checking that we have capitals in the beginnings of sentences, finger spaces between words, and punctuation at the ends of our sentences. Children are always encouraged to add more detail; whether it be more sentences, or more detail in their pictures!
Math- We are working on joining(adding) and separating (subtraction) with numbers up to 10; using story problems in class!
Students model and create addition and subtraction problems that involve real-life situations. The emphasis is on the problem solving process which includes understanding the problem, making a plan, carrying out the plan, and determining if the answer is reasonable.
For example, If there are 4 children playing on the swings and then 3 more friends come to play, there are now 7 children playing together on the swings!
In class, I tell the story and we act it out with either students, or we use unifix cubes. Children have to decide whether it is a joining problem, or a separating problem, and then tell me what the answer is!
Social Studies- We are discussing wants and needs of families. Anything that we need to live is a need; air, water, food, shelter, clothing.
Science- We are learning about motion.
Students will observe and describe the motion of objects.
For example, straight line (car), zig zag (skiing), up and down (yo-yo), back and forth (boomerang), round and round (ferris wheel), fast, slow, movement, patterns.
