November 2-6

Good Evening families, I hope you all had a great weekend!  I wanted to let you know what we will be learning this week at school:

ELA:  We will be looking at procedural texts and documents this week.  Then students will  be shown, how to extract information from what we are reading and then use it. For example, if we are reading instructions for a recipe, they will learn how to follow the written instructions to complete the recipe.

We will follow pictorial directions including, but not limited to: recipes, science experiments, instructions, directions, manuals, game rules, craft projects

We will identify the meaning of specific signs including, but not limited to: traffic signs, warning signs; for example, poison symbols, environmental print.

We will continue identifying letters/sounds and rhyming too!  This week, students will segment and blend syllables in an object’s name.
Segmenting is when the sounds in a word are said slowly in 1/2 second intervals.  For example, cat would be segmented like this: /c/-/a/-/t/.   Blending is the ability to hear word parts/sounds and then put them together to identify the word.

Writing:  This week we will be creating pictorial  instructions!  This is an extension of what we will be learning in ELA.  For example, pictorial instructions can be made, showing how a child gets ready for bed at night.  They may draw/label what they do before going to sleep at night.

Math:  This week, we will be reviewing concepts that we have previously learned!

Students will identify coins (penny, nickel, dime, quarter).

Students will demonstrate knowledge of numbers 11-15 by creating sets of numbers and writing number symbols to identify quantities.

Students use objects to create horizontal and vertical graphs. Students verbally describe the information the graph represents using general statements and comparative language. The data is interpreted to answer questions regarding the graph.

Students model and create addition and subtraction problems that involve real-life situations. The emphasis is on the problem solving process which includes understanding the problem, making a plan, carrying out the plan, and determining if the answer is reasonable. Multiple strategies are showcased to highlight the importance of solving problems in a variety of ways and to make connections among the different strategies.

Social Studies:  We will identify various examples of technology used in the home and school.
Students will describe how technology helps accomplish different jobs and how they use technology everyday.

Science:  Students will explore rocks by observing, describing, comparing, and sorting by size, shape, color, and texture.
Children will be able to observe, describe, compare, and sort rocks by their size, shape, color, and texture.

If you have any questions, or would like ideas for activities that you can do at home, to support your child's learning, please let me know!!  :-)
